Flue-cured Virginia
Flue-cured Virginia is a type of tobacco that is known for its bright, sweet, and smooth flavour. It is a staple in the tobacco industry and is used in various tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco.
The process of curing Virginia tobacco involves hanging the harvested leaves in a barn with temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The leaves are then heated using a flue-curing method, which involves passing hot air through the barn. This process causes the leaves to turn from green to a bright golden colour, giving them a distinct aroma and flavour.
As part of our commitment to delivering sustainably we are advocating for our contracted farmers to build a 'Chigaffa', a natural Air Curing System, which offers a crucial 'buffer' between harvesting and curing. By creating a 'window' between these time-sensitive processes, farmers are able to rapidly harvest more leaves, that would have otherwise been discarded due to lack of adequate curing capacity. This is invaluable infrastructure for improving the efficiency of the harvesting and curing processes.
Packed Product Types
Tipped and Threshed
Tipping and Threshing is a unique process where the tips of the leaves are delicately sliced away from the leaf material. The remaining leaf material is then threshed to separate the lamina from the midrib. The tips are then reincorporated and the material is carefully re-dried and packaged, ensuring the best quality product.
Butted Loose-Leaf
This is a specialized process where the butts of the tobacco leaves are removed. After a careful feeding and re-drying process, the tobacco is then packaged and readied for sale in its loose-leaf form.
Bundle
Bundle Packing is a process where top quality tobaccos are re-dried and carefully packed into whole leaf form, ready for sale and distribution.
Hand-Strip
Hand-Strip is a labor-intensive process where tobacco lamina is meticulously stripped by hand from the stem either as a full strip or ¾ strip. The tobacco is then re-dried and packaged for sale and distribution.
Stem
Stem is a by-product of the tobacco processing phase, extracted from the leaf and re-dried for packaging. The stem comes in a variety of sizes, including long, short, and mixed sizes.
Fines
Fines is a type of by-product of tobacco processing, marketed and sold in various categories depending on its quality and size. The most common sizes of fines are 1/8" and 1/16" in size.
